That Jews lived in Persia during biblical times, needs no further explanation. One only needs to consult the Book of Esther, read during the Purim festival. Later in history, Jews in Persia (present-day Iran) led industrious and creative lives for over 2000 years. They enjoyed periods of prosperity, but also severe persecutions. The Jewish community of Persia has produced distinguished poets, philosophers and thinkers. Since the 12th century, when the community numbered half a million, Iranian Jewry has declined steadily, especially during periods of persecution, culminating in the mass-exodus during and shortly after the Islamic revolution of 1979, when some 50,000 Jews left Iran.

The coin's obverse shows a round Hanukka Lamp from Persia, carved from stone in the early 17th century, following an ancient tradition from the time of the Babylonian Talmud.
