Beschrijving

Philips ODYSSEY 2001 Game Console (1977), uit 1977, in goede staat en werkend, met originele verpakking.

The Philips Odyssey 2001 is a dedicated first-generation home video game console released by Philips in 1977 (mainly in Europe). It’s part of the Odyssey family of early consoles that came after the original Magnavox Odyssey lineage.

Heritage & Lineage

Philips had acquired Magnavox in the mid-1970s, and after that began releasing its own Odyssey-branded consoles in Europe based on Magnavox designs. The Odyssey 2001 is essentially the European Philips version of the Magnavox Odyssey 4000, with some differences in games and controllers.

It replaced the earlier Philips Odyssey 200 / 2000 models and was itself succeeded by the Philips Odyssey 2100 in 1978.

Technical & Game Features

Dedicated hardware: Like other consoles of its era, the Odyssey 2001 did not use cartridges — its games were built into the hardware.

Chip: It used a National Semiconductor MM-57105 integrated game-chip.

Games included: It offered three classic Pong-style games:

Tennis

Hockey

Squash
These games were output in colour and with sound generated directly on the TV, which was a notable step up from earlier black-and-white Pong consoles.

Controls: The system used detachable paddle controllers (rotary dials), which was typical for Pong-style consoles but different from joysticks.

Physical & Design Notes

The Odyssey 2001 usually came in a white or light-coloured plastic case with simple graphics typical of 1970s consumer electronics.

It was designed to connect to a television’s antenna input and run off an external power adapter.

Historical Context

Like most Pong-derived systems of the era, the Odyssey 2001 is part of the first generation of home video game consoles (mid-1970s) — before programmable cartridges became the norm.

These consoles were made to play only a few built-in games and were mostly marketed as simple entertainment devices plugged into your TV.

Collector Interest

Today the Philips Odyssey 2001 is considered a vintage / collectible item among retro gaming enthusiasts. Working units in original boxes can occasionally be found in collections and auctions.

In short: the Philips Odyssey 2001 is a 1977 dedicated home game console from the early era of videogames. Based on Magnavox hardware and featuring a handful of built-in Pong-style games with colour graphics and paddle controllers, it’s a classic piece of gaming history from the very beginnings of the industry.
