Undiscovered Species of a Tailless Whip Scorpion in 99-Million-Year-Old Amber
This whip scorpion is not only an undiscovered species but also exhibits features never seen before in insects. Remarkably, this whip scorpion has whips attached to each leg instead of just the two front legs. Additionally, one of its legs branches into two legs. To make it even more unique, the photos reveal that the legs are interconnected, forming a kind of lasso.
I will explain what can be seen in the photos. I have spent many hours studying this insect in amber. Initially, I thought it was a spider with prey, as it appeared that way in macro photography. However, under the microscope, other characteristics became apparent. What makes it more challenging to observe is that there is another insect just above the tailless whip scorpion in the amber, which it touches with its antenna. It was likely on its way to eat this insect.
Photo Explanation:
The first 7 photos show the tailless whip scorpion from different angles, followed by a photo of the entire amber piece.
The first photo after the full insect photo shows that one leg splits into two.
The next photo shows how the legs are connected, creating a kind of lasso.
The photo that follows depicts the splitting of the leg from a different angle.
The subsequent photo shows the split legs from the side of the head.
Unfortunately, the legs on the other side of the tailless whip scorpion are slightly damaged in the amber. One leg is missing, but it can still be seen slightly further inside the amber, as shown in the photo after this.
The next photo was taken to show the damage to the legs on the other side. The legs here appear to split and later rejoin. (Whether this damage occurred due to pressure in the amber or is a natural characteristic of this insect remains unclear.)
The following 5 photos show the insect's head from various angles. Small pedipalps are visible.
One final photo illustrates that there is another insect located just above the tailless whip scorpion, which is being touched by one of its legs or antennae from below.
To conclude, one last photo shows the piece on a scale, clearly demonstrating that the tailless whip scorpion is easily visible even without magnification.
Weight: 9.22 grams
Length: 4.8 cm
Width: 4.2 cm
Hopefully, this piece will go to someone who enjoys studying it at least as much as I did. It's perfect for the advanced collector and truly a museum-worthy piece. Will be shipped with insurance.
