Origin: Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, Northern Myanmar
Geological age: Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian, approx. 99 million years ago)
Amber dimensions: 1.6 × 1.5 cm
Weight: 0.43 grams
Material: Kachin amber (Burmese amber)
The examined piece of amber contains an exceptionally well-preserved insect measuring approximately 1.0 cm in body length. The morphological features suggest a nymph of a mantis-like insect or a closely related group.
Observed characteristics:
- Distinct raptorial forelegs with spines (used for capturing prey);
- Clear segmentation of the abdomen;
- Long, segmented antennae;
- Short wing buds, consistent with a juvenile stage;
One leg is missing (possibly due to ante-mortem injury or postmortem displacement).
A striking, elongated, segmented-looking structure is present near the right hind leg.
Appendage Analysis – Hypothesis of Parasitism:
The structure near the hind leg is the most intriguing aspect of this inclusion. Visual features include:
Thin, elongated body with multiple visible "rings" or segments;
Slight axial curvature;
Apparent attachment or integration with the host's exoskeleton.
This appendage may represent a parasitic worm, possibly belonging to the group Nematomorpha (horsehair worms), or an unknown group of endo- or ectoparasites from the Cretaceous.
