Beschrijving
Dit Krijt amberfossiel van een enorme honingbij toont pollinatie en parasitisme bewaard; natuurlijk en gepolijst, met pollen op poten en lijf en zichtbare parasitaire larven, een waardevolle vondst voor musea en onderzoekers.

Huge honeybee in Cretaceous amber, the largest ever found.
Anterior body (head + thorax): 11.4 mm
Detached abdomen (lying separately nearby): ~7.0 mm
Total estimated body length: ~18.4 mm
New species of bee most closely related to the modern known honeybee (Apis), scientific breaktrough.
Pollen grains on its legs, body and head show that the bee had recently visited one or more flowers.
Additional evidence that the fossil bee had visited flowers are the beetle triungulins — larvae — in the same piece of amber. One can be found attached to the body (picture 12), some are found in the same piece nearby the bee.
The last picture shows a parasitic worm inside the abdomen of the bee, very rare occurrence to be captured in time. Evidence of a parasitic worm feeding on its host.
Interestingly, the back of the thorax bears a pattern reminiscent of a death’s-head (like that of the death’s-head hawkmoth).
This bee species is way larger than any known Cretaceous bee species ever found in amber from the dinosaur era. Making it perfect for a museum.
It is highly likely that the bee became trapped in the tree resin due to the presence of parasitic organisms feeding on it.
