J R "Johnny" Carstairs
Leven
J R John Robertson “Johnny” Carstairs was born in Leven in 1885 to William Carstairs, salesman for a baking company, and his wife, Catherine Wilkie. There was a golfing tradition in the family with William featuring in Leven Thistle and inter-town matches at the beginning of the 20th century.
Another William Carstairs is listed as a cleekmaker in St Andrews on the 1910 valuation roll and there may be some familial connection with him. John followed his father’s passion but made a career out of it, opening his clubmaking shop at the links in 1910. During the First World War he was stationed at Inverkeithing with the Royal Engineers but also served in France for a period.
After the war his name appears as a regular prizewinner with the Leven Thistle club but he was also a member of the Leven Golfing Society and the Leven Golf Club. Later in life he was honorary president of the Methil Golf Club, a post he held until his death. Between the wars the firm had about 12-14 clubmakers producing handmade custom clubs and from the clubs I have seen, and the recollections of his contemporaries, he took great care in the aesthetic appearance of the wooden heads he produced and in making clubs to meet individual players’ requirements.
He was in his late 70s when he retired around 1965 and the business was taken over by Bob Harrison who had started there as an apprentice in 1936.
