Offered for sale is an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, approximately 30 × 40 cm, painted on a wooden panel in the traditional Orthodox iconographic style.
The icon depicts Saint Nicholas holding the open Gospel, with Christ and the Mother of God appearing on either side. The icon features tempera painting and gilding. The surface has characteristic age-related craquelure and signs of time.
Of particular interest is an original handwritten note in German preserved on the reverse of the icon. The following can be read on the note:
“St. Nicolaus”
“Alt russisch”
“14–15 Jahrh.”
The note also contains references to tempera painting and gilding, as well as the date 1980 and the name Alexander.
