Wessel Couzijn (1912-1984), 'De Stedemaagd van Amsterdam'/'The Patroness of Amsterdam'

Stone carved standing figure, on square foot. Previously only known to us through a photograph. Created as part of a design for a fountain on Dam Square in Amsterdam that was never realized. This was a commission given to Couzijn for the second year of the Prix de Rome grant. The figure was to be placed on a 5- to 6-meter-high column at a corner of the fountain. The sculpture was cut to half its final, life-size.
