The Sony Alpha A35 (SLT-A35) is an entry-level digital single-lens transparent mirror (SLT) camera that combines features of traditional DSLRs with the benefits of mirrorless technology. It features a 16.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and a fixed translucent mirror, which allows for continuous phase-detection autofocus during both still photography and video recording, a significant advantage over conventional DSLRs that use slower contrast-detection systems during video. This design enables faster continuous shooting, with a maximum rate of 5.5 frames per second (fps) in standard mode and up to 7 fps in telezoom mode, although the latter reduces resolution to 8.4 megapixels.
The camera is praised for its excellent image quality, with sharp detail, good contrast, and a strong dynamic range, particularly in high ISO settings. The electronic viewfinder offers 100% field coverage and a high resolution of 1.44 million pixels, providing a clear, real-time preview of the image, including the effects of applied filters or scene modes, which can be seen before the photo is taken. Video capabilities are robust, supporting Full HD 1080i recording with continuous autofocus, a key feature that sets it apart from many competitors at the time of its release.
