Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) was one of the most important Spanish Baroque painters of the 17th century. He traveled to Italy in his youth, where he acquired the nickname "Lo Spagnoletto" (the Litle Spaniard). He initially settled in Rome, where he became acquainted with Flemish artists, who like him were inspired by Caravaggio's chiaroscuro style, but he soon moved on to Naples (then a Spanish possession), where he remained for the rest of his life.
