In his own England, Cliff Richard is still a folk hero, entering high on the charts with every album. For this album, his 42nd (!), Cliff Richard enlisted the help of a number of soul veterans. Richard sings duets with artists such as Roberta Flack, Candi Staton and Deniece Williams. Don't expect swinging Motown soul, because Soulicious focuses on ballads. With a slick production Cliff delivers tailor-made listening pop. The years seem to have barely affected Cliff's voice: no cracks or scratches. Some of his singing partners are wearing out. This does not apply to Candi Staton; the cheerful Teardrops, in which she appears, is a welcome uptempo exception in the largely quiet material. Soulicious is certainly not exciting, all the more civilized. This is the repertoire that Cliff Richard's steadily aging fan base is waiting for.
