After an absence of seven years, Tom Waits is back with Mule Variations, the successor to Bone Machine. The CD fits seamlessly into the sublime list of Swordfishtrombones, Raindogs and Frank's Wild Years, records he made in the mid-1980s. It's all there again: the fake pianos, the jerky and jerky guitar work of Marc Ribot, Waits' cracking and distorted voice, the heart-rending ballads and his idiosyncratic take on blues, rock and country. Mule variations does not make the impression that the thunder-in-the-sky Swordfishtrombones made in 1983. Everything sounds too familiar for that. The record proves that Tom Waits is still at a lonely height.
