Part 1: Young Love 1853. The Austrian Empire has weathered the 1848 Uprising, but tensions remain. Young Emperor Franz Joseph, however, has something else on his mind: love. Although his mother wants to marry him to the Bavarian princess Helene, it is Helene's younger sister Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi, who drives him crazy. Franz Joseph defies his mother's wishes, but the love between him and Sisi is tested by more than just his meddling mother.

Part 2: War The threat of war hangs over the empire. Sisi and Franz Joseph have pinned their hopes on the French Emperor Napoleon, but he betrays Austria. War rages on the home front as well. Sisi is constantly battling with her mother-in-law over her children's upbringing. Can Sisi and Franz Joseph win on both fronts?
