Probably the least-known series in the Rolex catalogue, the Cellini was first introduced in the early 1960’s and was named after Italian artist Benvenuto Cellini. The watch was the brainchild of marketing director Rene-Paul Jeanneret, who wanted Rolex to offer a high-end dress style timepiece as an alternative to the tool watches they were known for.

The design of the Cellini series has changed plenty of times throughout its history. From elegant round cases of the early models to the radical asymmetrical King Midas (rumoured to be designed by the legendary Gerald Genta), the Cellini has always offered a stylish alternative to the iconic Oyster case style. Perhaps in response to offerings from Patek Philippe and A Lange & Söhne, the modern Cellini has returned to more conventional dress watch stylings and is available only in precious metal with either small seconds or moonphase complications.

Despite its status as the overlooked Rolex, the Cellini has a loyal following and has had some pretty famous names wear one over the years. Elvis Presley reportedly adored his aptly named King Midas and the watch now sits on display amongst his other prized possessions in Graceland. The person most associated with the Cellini is none other than former US President Barack Obama, who has regularly been wearing a white gold model since leaving office.
