This painting depicts the scene when Dutch scholars in Edo gathered at Shibarando in Mizutani-cho, Kyokyo, the residence of Otsuki Iwanai (Gensai), to celebrate the so-called Oranda New Year on leap November 11, 1794 (Kansei 6), which is New Year's Day in the Western calendar of 1795, and was praised by the congregation. Iwanai's son Iwanai (Heiji) made a scroll from this and inscribed Iwanai's final work, Immediate action during illness, over the original painting. This was the first New Year's Day banquet according to the solar calendar, and is a valuable document that should be called a monument to the birth of a new culture in Japan. De poster is 42x59 cm.
