Wallace Tiernan Bathythermograaf

Een bathythermograaf is een oceaanmeetinstrument dat de watertemperatuur in relatie tot de diepte meet. Het is een apparaat dat wordt gebruikt om de temperatuurstructuur van de oceaan te onderzoeken, met name de thermocline, de laag waar de temperatuur snel verandert. Deze is van de Australische marine geweest en werd gebruikt om onderzeeboten op te sporen.

The bathythermograph, or BT, also known as the Mechanical Bathythermograph, or MBT; is a device that holds a temperature sensor and a transducer to detect changes in water temperature versus depth down to a depth of approximately 285 meters .

This unit is ex Australian Navy. This is a mechanical thermograph that records depth and temperature to enable the location of submarines.

“Comprises two sensors …. one in the nose responds to pressure (depth) by pushing a glass slide along the central axis of the body. The other sensor consists of a long tube wrapped around the tail section where the fluid expands or contracts depending on the water temperature. This is turn drives a Bourdon Tube which moves a stylus more or less at right angles to the centerline. This results in a scratch line on the smoked glass slide giving a pressure diagram from the surface down to depth and back to the surface.“

Dit fascinerende instrument is al heel lang in mijn bezit - ik heb het uiteraard nooit gebruikt - maar ik denk er nu een andere oud-marine man mee gelukkig te kunnen maken. Moet wel wat opgepoetst worden.
Het lijkt er overigens op dat het instrument ook nooit door anderen is gebruikt. De “grids”, op een na, zitten nog in hun originele verpakking.
