Willard Morgan, who was a pioneer himself in helping to introduce the first Leicas in the United States and Henry Lester gathered "how to" articles written by Leica experts in many different fields and assembled them in the very first LEICA
MANUAL first published in August 1935. This handy volume quickly became a standard reference handbook for 35mm photography, used not only by Leica photographers, but also by those who
used other 35mm cameras. The Leica Manual has earned a niche as a basic part of a photographer's library. It is "the photographer's manual" regardless of format(s) used.
The formula must have been right, because very soon the book went into its second printing (November 1935), continuing through a progression of 15 editions in 25 printings, plus a Spanish language version, adding up to well over one million copies! The book, like the camera, had a number of firsts: it was the
first book about an extensive camera system; it was the first to use different authors for each chapter involving specialized applications of the very same camera. Each addition updated the manual with new models of the camera, new accessories, or new applications, and occasionally an insert was included with the very latest product information.
It is very appropriate to honor the successful Leica Manual with a reprint of the very first edition, exactly as it was originally published in 1935, complete with period advertisements. Just like the first model of the Leica camera itself, it is a pleasure to handle and to study this pioneer volume!
