Snobists like to mock Toto as an example of middle of the road and bite-sized radio chunks. It is not entirely unjustified criticism for a supergroup formed by in-demand studio musicians, whose aim was to merge pop styles into a commercially attractive and accessible whole. But Toto turned out to contain depth, especially when it came to writing memorable pop songs, as anyone who listened to their hugely successful 1978 debut can attest. Toto made clever hooks that linger and wrapped them in a heavy guitar / keyboard sound that embraced soft rock, hard rock and a little bit of rhythm 'n blues. Plenty of variation: from nursery rhymes wrapped in a smooth groove (Georgy Porgy), combining funky verses with sing-along choruses (I ' ll Supply The Love) to a portion of real rock 'n roll (the hit single Hold The Line). Anyone who listened to the radio in the 1970s will recognize the aforementioned songs.
