What is a potentiometer for in the HVAC world?
As you turn the knob of a potentiometer more or less, it increases or decreases the control signal it gives off.Passive potentiometerA passive potentiometer or variable resistor does not need a power supply to function. You simply apply a voltage to the potentiometer (the incoming voltage or source voltage), and the variable resistor will only let part of it through depending on the position of the knob. So if the incoming voltage is 10 VDC, the outgoing control signal will always be between 0 and 10 VDC.

Incoming signal So you need a "source" source that can supply this incoming signal to the passive potentiometer. Most devices that work on the basis of an analog control signal such as electronic speed controllers or frequency converters have an output on which a source voltage is available. This can then go to the potentiometer and comes back (partly) as a control signal.

Control signal
This control signal can be used directly to control EC fans or valve drives. But also to control the speed of a voltage-controllable AC motor remotely via an electronic speed controller such as the EVS or MVS series, or via a frequency converter such as the FI-E series. The potentiometer then functions as a discrete control, while the speed controller is located in a technical room or switch cabinet, for example. Extra dry contact! This allows you to switch an external device on or off as soon as you move the potentiometer in or out of the leftmost position. In the leftmost position, the dry contact is open.
