Review: Suhr V70 Pickups – The Next Step in Vintage Tone Evolution
by Bryce Rosenblatt
When Suhr first released their V60 pickups, it didn’t take long for them to become a benchmark for what a vintage-style single-coil should sound like. With their rich, bell-like chime, punchy midrange, and dynamic response, the V60s became a favorite among players seeking the ultimate in vintage Fender tones — and for good reason. But now, Suhr has gone even further, unveiling the V70 pickups, and folks, they’ve raised the bar once again.
Let me start by saying: if you thought the V60s were the best thing to ever happen to single-coil pickups, you’ll be blown away by the V70s.
A New Level of Clarity
The V70s improve upon the V60s in several key ways, but perhaps the most striking difference is the added clarity and articulation. The V70s seem to emphasize the high end just a touch more, delivering a sparkling, almost glassy top end without losing any of the smoothness you expect from a vintage-inspired pickup. Where the V60s already offered a sweet balance between warmth and definition, the V70s have a more pronounced presence that allows every note to ring out with a purity that’s perfect for clean and overdriven tones alike.
For context, imagine the V60s as a classic 60s Strat sound — woody, with a slightly creamy midrange and a bit of grit when pushed hard. The V70s take that foundation and open it up. There’s an added high-end shimmer, and the low-end response feels tighter, more focused, yet still round enough to give a thick, musical warmth. Whether you’re playing fingerpicked blues or biting rock riffs, every note feels defined, but never harsh.
The Middle Position: Where Magic Happens
One of the standout features of the V70s is how they handle the infamous “in-between” or middle positions. If you’re a fan of the quack that defines so many iconic Strat sounds, the V70s deliver it in spades. But this quack isn’t just an effect; it’s a rich, complex tone that sings through every chord, every note, with a new level of depth. The response in the middle positions (specifically the 2nd and 4th) is cleaner and more harmonically complex than what you might be used to, and it doesn’t suffer from the typical honky, nasal quality some other vintage-style pickups can get.
Mellow When You Need It, Aggressive When You Don’t
One of the reasons I’m so excited about the V70s is how they handle dynamics. Whether you’re rolling off the volume knob to get a mellower sound, or digging in for a more aggressive attack, the V70s respond beautifully. They clean up nicely with a reduction in gain, but they never feel like they lose their character — they just become a little more intimate, a little more subtle.
When you want them to roar, though, they don’t disappoint. The V70s retain a certain amount of grit even at higher volumes, delivering a raw, punchy response that’s perfect for classic rock or blues leads. The more you push them, the more they open up, creating a natural overdrive that never sounds sterile or forced.
The Upgrade
Now, full disclosure: I’ve been a longtime fan of Suhr pickups, and I’ve been playing the V60s for years in my Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster. But after testing the V70s, I’m convinced it’s time for an upgrade. There’s something about the V70s that adds a level of refinement to the tone of my Strat that the V60s — as great as they were — simply don’t quite reach.
The V60s were always my go-to for that vintage, “vibe” tone, but the V70s deliver something deeper. It’s like they’ve managed to refine the magic of the V60s while making them more versatile and sonically rich. They provide that authentic, vintage-style Strat tone that we all know and love, but with an added clarity, presence, and dynamic responsiveness that I just can’t ignore.
So, I’m making the switch. The V70s are going into my Custom Shop Strat, and I couldn’t be more excited. If you’re looking for pickups that offer a perfect balance of vintage authenticity and modern versatility, these might just be the best thing you can do for your guitar.
Final Thoughts
In the world of single-coil pickups, the Suhr V70s are an impressive leap forward. While the V60s were a stunning achievement, the V70s take everything that made them great and refine it. They deliver sparkling highs, tighter lows, and a newfound clarity that makes them perfect for a wide range of musical styles. Whether you’re playing clean, dirty, or somewhere in between, these pickups give you everything you need — and more.
If you’ve been looking to elevate your Stratocaster’s tone to the next level, I strongly recommend giving the Suhr V70s a spin. They’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about vintage-style single-coils. And trust me, once you hear them, you won’t want to play anything else.
