The Polish Jewish community was among the oldest in Europe, approximately one thousand years old. The Jews of Poland experienced periods of suffering and anti-Jewish riots and measures over the centuries. Nevertheless, their numbers kept increasing to become the largest Jewish community in the world. All that ended abruptly during the Holocaust, when all but the entire Jewish population was annihilated in the Nazi extermination camps. After the Second World War, a tiny Jewish presence re-emerged, only to be confronted by perseverant antisemitism, and even sporadic pogroms. After 1967 the already small Jewish community dwindled even further. During the first half of the twentieth century, several waves of Polish Jews emigrated to Palestine and later Israel, where they became a major driving force behind the nation's development.

The coin depicts a 60 cm high silver Hanukka Lamp made in 1854, during a period in which Jewish silver and goldsmiths flourished all over Poland. A swan adorns the top of the stem, and below an embossed flower.
